Devotion on Who Jesus Is: The Eternal Word and Creator

R. Dwain Minor   -

Scripture: John 1:1-5, 14 (ESV) “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Let’s dive right into the heart of John’s prologue and behold who Jesus truly is—the eternal Word! He didn’t start at Bethlehem; no, He existed before the beginning, with God and as God Himself. When creation burst forth, the Word was there, not as a bystander, but as the very Creator of all things. Everything you see, touch, or breathe owes its existence to Him. We are dependent creatures, relying on food, air, and God’s mercy for every moment, but Jesus? He has life in Himself—independent, eternal, self-sustaining.

His light pierces the darkness of this wicked world, sustaining all humanity like the sun nourishes the earth. Even before He took on flesh, His glory shone. And when He came to Earth, what glory the apostles witnessed: miracles, teachings, the transfiguration, the cross, and the resurrection! In Him dwells the fullness of deity bodily (Colossians 2:9). He is God the Son, second person of the Trinity, always with the Father, always God.

Worship Him! If you’re not yet a believer, you owe Him your allegiance—He made you! Who are you to say “no” to the One who hung the stars and set the seas’ boundaries? Turn from your rebellion and believe!

Application: Today, pause and acknowledge Jesus as your Creator. Let this truth fuel your reverence and drive you to share His identity with someone lost in darkness.

Prayer: Eternal Word, Jesus, forgive my forgetfulness of Your divine majesty. Help me worship You as God and Creator, and draw unbelievers to bow before You. Amen.
