Remember the Lord in the Day of Trouble (Psalm 77) Devotion #3

Shifting from despair, the psalmist turns to God’s past faithfulness: “Then I said, ‘I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.’ I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old” (Psalm 77:10-11, ESV). He recalls the Exodus—waters trembling, thunder roaring, God redeeming His people with power: “You redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph” (Psalm 77:15, ESV). No one acts like our God in history.

We do this with friends—rehearse past kindnesses to reaffirm their care. Do the same with God. Think of Joseph, sold into slavery yet elevated to save Israel. Or the Israelites, enslaved for 400 years, then freed through plagues and the Red Sea. But as Christians, our greatest reminder is the cross: “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him” (1 John 4:9, ESV). There, in history’s darkest moment, God turned evil for our good.

When troubles cloud your view, recount God’s mighty works. It reassures us of His power and love. Trust His unseen footprints (Psalm 77:19). Lord, as we remember Your deeds, especially the cross, strengthen our faith in Your ongoing work for our good. Amen.
