Devotion 2: The Curse Lifted by Christ
Scripture: Galatians 3:10-14
Key Verse: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’” (Galatians 3:13, ESV)
Reflection:
The sermon highlights the impossibility of keeping the law perfectly and the curse that falls on those who try and fail to do so. We are born under the law and cannot keep it, therefore the curse is upon our heads. Yet, Jesus took that curse upon Himself on the cross, as Galatians 3:13 proclaims. The hymn “Not What My Hands Have Done” describes this: “Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin.” Because Jesus became the curse for us, we are freed from the law’s demands and welcomed into God’s family by faith. This truth shifts our focus from striving to trusting, from fear to gratitude. Reflect on the weight of sin Jesus carried for you and the freedom you now have in Him.
Application:
Write down one area where you feel burdened by guilt or failure. Then, read Galatians 3:13 aloud, personalizing it: “Christ redeemed me from the curse.” Thank Jesus for taking your curse and pray for strength to live in His freedom today.
Prayer:
Dear Savior, thank You for bearing the curse I deserved. Your sacrifice has set me free from guilt and shame. Help me to walk in the joy of Your redemption and share Your love with others. Amen.
