Unless The Lord Builds The House: Devotion One From The Sermon “Trust The Lord And Work” (Psalm 127)
Scripture: Psalm 127:1 – “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”
Reflection: Parenting is a high and holy calling, but it’s one we can’t do in our own strength. Psalm 127 reminds us that unless the Lord is the foundation of our homes, all our efforts are in vain. As parents, we’re tempted to think we can control every outcome—our kids’ behavior, their choices, their future. But the truth is, only God can build a home that stands firm. Our job is to trust Him and work faithfully. This means praying for our children, teaching them God’s Word, and modeling a life of faith. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about pointing them to the One who is.
Think about your home today. Are you leaning on your own wisdom, or are you seeking the Lord’s guidance? Maybe you’re exhausted, feeling like your efforts aren’t enough. Take heart—God sees your labor, and He’s the one who makes it fruitful. Trust Him to build what you cannot.
Application: Spend time in prayer today, asking God to build your home. Write down one specific area of parenting where you need to trust Him more (e.g., a child’s attitude, a tough decision). Commit to praying over it daily this week.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I confess I often try to build my home in my own strength. Forgive me and help me trust You as the true Builder. Guide my parenting, may it be done according to Your Word, fill my home with Your presence, and let my children see Jesus in me. In His name, Amen.
