No Other Gospel Devotion 3: Pleasing God, Not People (Galatians 1:10)

Scripture: Galatians 1:10 (ESV)
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Reflection:
Paul was resolved to please God, not people, even when it meant confronting the Galatians’ error. Seeking human approval can lead us to compromise the gospel, watering it down to avoid conflict. Paul’s example challenges us to prioritize God’s truth over popularity or comfort. When we live to please God, we find courage to stand for the gospel, even when it’s unpopular. And you will often find that the message of the gospel itself is unpopular. Our identity as Christ’s servants frees us from the pressure to conform to worldly expectations. And it frees us to preach and teach the truth.

Application:
Identify a situation where you’re tempted to please people at the expense of God’s truth (e.g., avoiding a conversation about faith to keep peace). Pray for boldness to speak or act in a way that honors God. Write a short statement affirming your commitment to serve Christ above all, and think about it when facing peer pressure.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, forgive me for seeking human approval over Your will. Fill me with courage to live as Christ’s servant, proclaiming Your gospel boldly. Help me to prioritize pleasing You in all I do. Thank You for the freedom of serving You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
