Remember the Lord in the Day of Trouble (Psalm 77) Devotion #2

When trouble lingers, our minds can spiral into doubt, just like the psalmist’s did. He meditates on God but ends up questioning everything: “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” (Psalm 77:7-9, ESV). These aren’t just words; they’re the heart’s cry when circumstances make us forget what we know to be true about God.

We can be devastated by events and our thoughts of God can make us feel even more discouraged. That’s when we must preach truth to ourselves. God is omniscient, omnipotent, and His love for us is unchanging. How do we know? Look to the Gospel: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, ESV). His promises aren’t void; He works all things for our good (Romans 8:28). In the pit, remind yourself: God loves me eternally, proven at Calvary. He’s in control, knowing every detail.

If you don’t know these truths deeply, dig into God’s Word now—before the storm hits. It’s hard to recall what you never learned.

Today, list out God’s attributes and thank Him for them.

Father, when doubts assail, help us remember Your unchanging character and the salvation You’ve secured for us in Christ. Amen.
