Devotion 2: Nurturing Through Godly Discipline

Vbcconway   -

Scripture: Ephesians 6:4 – “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

Reflection:
The sermon highlights that discipline, when rooted in love, is a vital part of raising children. The end goal of discipline is not punishment. The end goal of our discipline is about guiding children toward godliness. This is very similar to God’s discipline toward us. He disciplines those He loves, which is why we also discipline our children (Hebrews 12:7). As fathers, we are tasked with setting boundaries that reflect God’s truth, helping our children grow in character and faith. Think about how you discipline your children. Is it consistent and compassionate, pointing them to Christ? Are we frustrated because we are just disciplining every time we get frustrated? Godly discipline shapes hearts to follow the Lord.

Application:
Reflect on your approach to discipline. Consider what is most effective for your children. Give thought and prayer to the method. Remember, this is about forming your children into God honoring, Christ exalting adults one day. Be intentional and plan the rules. Make them simple. And plan for consistency.

Prayer:
Lord, You discipline me as a loving Father, and I desire to do the same for my children. Grant me wisdom to set boundaries that reflect Your truth and love. Help me to discipline in a way that draws my children closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
