Rest In The Lord: Devotion Two From The Sermon “Trust The Lord And Work” (Psalm 127)

Scripture: Psalm 127:2 – “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.”

Reflection: Parenting can keep you up at night, can’t it? Worries about our kids’ safety, their faith, or their future can rob us of rest. Psalm 127:2 tells us that God gives His beloved sleep—not because our problems vanish, but because He’s in control. We’re called to work hard in raising our children, but we’re not meant to carry the burden of anxiety. God invites us to lay our worries at His feet and rest in His provision.

This verse isn’t just about physical sleep; it’s about a heart at peace. Yes, discipline and teach them diligently, but then rest in knowing God loves them even more than you do. He’s working in their hearts, even when you can’t see it.

Application: Tonight, before bed, read Psalm 127:2 and write down one worry about your children that’s keeping you up. Surrender it to God in prayer, asking for His peace. Then, thank Him for the gift of rest.

Prayer: Lord, You are my keeper and the keeper of my children. I give You my worries about [name specific concern]. Help me to rest in Your care, trusting You to work in their lives. Thank You for the gift of sleep. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
