Devotion 1: Bewitched by Works or Blessed by Faith? (Galatians 3:2)

Vbcconway   -

Scripture: Galatians 3:1-5
Key Verse: “Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?” (Galatians 3:2, ESV)

Reflection:
The sermon reminds us that the Galatians were “bewitched” into thinking they could earn God’s favor through their own efforts. Like them, we often fall into the trap of believing our good deeds—church attendance, generosity, or moral living—make us right with God. But Paul’s question cuts through: Did the Spirit come to you because of your works or because you believed? The answer is clear: faith alone connects us to Christ’s finished work. The hymn “Not What My Hands Have Done” echoes this, declaring that no human effort can save our guilty souls—only Christ’s work can. Today, reflect on where you might be relying on your own strength instead of resting in Jesus’ grace.

Application:
Think back to when you first believed. Did you believe in your own works or did you have faith? Did you receive the Spirit by faith or by working to achieve righteousness? Obviously, it was by faith. Thank God that your salvation doesn’t depend on your efforts but on Christ’s perfect sacrifice. Ask Him to help you rest in His grace today.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your perfect work on the cross that saves me completely. Help me to trust in Your grace alone and live in the freedom of Your Spirit. Amen.
